The purpose of this program is to encourage students and other citizens to pursue music as a vocation or avocation, give the community the opportunity to meet professional musicians in an "up-close and personal fashion," develop future audience, patrons and contributors for Riverside Concerts and introduce the community to a variety of musical instruments and genres. To achieve this goal Riverside Concerts engages artists-in-residence to present school-based lecture/demonstrations, community outreach mini concerts, and Capstone events. A typical residency lasts six days.
Riverside Concerts presents artists who are skilled at engaging children and the community for this program. Riverside Concerts collaborates with diverse artists, ranging from string quartets and brass quintets to folk singers and artists from other cultures, to make this program possible. It also works in partnership with the schools and community-based venues to ensure that the program is well planned and meets the needs of our various target audiences.
This general arts education nature of the program seeks to turn students and the community on to the joy music has to offer, to give them an "entry-level arts experience" and hook them. Through this program Riverside Concerts, the schools, and various community venues invest resources to develop audiences and cultivate donors for future concerts. This collaborative approach results in communicating to citizens that music is part of the stuff that makes Rochester a great community in which to work and live.
2011 ARTISTS-IN-THE-SCHOOLS PROGRAM
Riverside Concerts is pleased to offer this year's Artists-In-Schools (A-I-S) program to area schools from February 28 - March 4, 2011. The program will last 50-60 minutes. You are welcome to bring 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes to the program. Your school will be the only school in attendance. We’d like to try and hold the number of students to 400, if possible. If this isn’t possible, let me know.
The cost of the 2011 A-I-S program is $500.00. This fee will cover one 50-60 minute visit to your school by MAMAK KHADEM, plus a sample CD of the Mamak’s music, and a study guide that can be duplicated and circulated to teachers to help prepare students for their visit.
This year we are presenting MAMAK KHADEM. Called "...one of the wonders of world trance music", by The Los Angeles Times, Mamak Khadem captivates audiences by blending her roots in the ancient poetry and music of the Persian masters with a bold and revolutionary new sound. By nature, she is a nomad, one who thrives on open spaces. By occupation, she is a bridge, one that connects geography to lore. In music, she is open to cultural influences, but she has chosen the classical Persian style as her base.
Mamak is formerly of the sensational cross-cultural fusion ensemble AXIOM OF CHOICE. Her first solo album "Jostojoo (Forever Seeking)" features some of Mamak's favorite Persian poetry blended with carefully chosen melodies rooted in the traditions of Armenia, Greece, Turkey and Iran. The performance will feature instruments such as the Santoor (Persian Hammer Dulcimer), Daf (Persian frame drum), Setar (Persian string), and Tonbak (Persian drum).
Mamak Khadem was born in Iran, at a time when tides were changing. She was part of the Children's Choir for National Radio and Television of Iran, but it wasn't until after the Iranian Revolution that her passion for singing waxed. Inspired by works of master musicians, she seized every opportunity to further her vocal art, regularly traveling back to Iran to study with some of the finest Persian vocalists and masters. She also benefited from the study of classical Indian singing tradition at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music in Northern California and from singing with the Los Angeles based Balkan choir Nevenka.
