Le Vent du Nord

Saturday, March 8, 2008 @ 7:30PM

Mayo Civic Center - Presentation Hall

Arts Midwest and Charter Communications  present traditional folk music of Quebec, Canada from Le Vent du Nord on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 7:30 PM in the Mayo Civic Center - Presentation Hall.

Le Vent du Nord has crowds dancing in the aisles to the sound of fiddle and hurdy-gurdy, featuring both traditional and original repertoire. One of the group’s many strengths is their animated stage presence: energetic, dynamic, generous and in touch with the audience. Le Vent du Nord consists of four singers/multi-instrumentalists: Nicolas Boulerice, Simon Beaudry, Olivier Demers and Réjean Brunet, who joined the group early in 2007. They sing originals and songs taken from the traditional repertoire, in their native French, to the delight of their audience for whom it is more often than not a foreign language. Le Vent du Nord continues to amaze their audiences, and whether they perform at a festival, college or performing arts center, people keep asking for more.

Since its inception in 2002, Le Vent du Nord has exploded onto the folk music scene. The group's first recording, Maudite moisson! , was awarded the Juno for traditional album of the year in 2004 and was nominated for the same award by ADISQ. Their second album, Les amants du Saint-Laurent, was also nominated by ADISQ in 2005 in addition to being chosen album of the year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. 2005 was also the year that saw the group being rewarded as North American traditional artist of the year in Austin, Texas. Their show was nominated for an OPUS award and was named Show of the year by the American radio-concert series Bound for Glory. The group also appeared on the top-ten charts of a few radio stations, as high as #1 on CIBL Montréal and #5 on BBC3 in the UK, ahead of such well-known artists as Youssou N'Dour and Peter Gabriel.

Artist-in-the-Schools Residency Program
In celebration of National Music in the Schools Month, the ensemble will spend the week prior to their performance at the Civic Center, (March 3 through March 7) in our local and surrounding elementary schools. All part of Riverside Concerts’ Artist-In-the-Schools Residency program which brings world-renowned artists directly to our young people while at school. With General Music and General Arts classes being dissolved and Band, Orchestra and Choir programs being pushed out of the curriculum, Riverside Concerts is committed, by way of our mission, to continue to bring artists to the local schools that will not only spark an interest in musical performance, but also to plant a seed that will help solidify our young people’s future as ongoing arts patrons. This program builds community and camaraderie among the students while teaching them the history of different cultures and those culture’s forms of musical art.

Cultural Exchange Network
The ensemble will also embark on a 3-city FREE Concert Preview library tour of Southeastern Minnesota . All part of Riverside Concerts' Cultural Exchange Network which provides live-musical events for citizens of rural communities who might not otherwise have access to such opportunities. This program is made possible by the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council.

This presentation is supported by the Performing Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes a great nation deserves great art, with additional contributions from General Mills Foundation, Land O’Lakes Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board
