The Rochester Concert Band, conducted by Charles E. Blattner, will perform a concert in tribute to the anniversary of our country's independence on Friday, July 4, 2008 at 8:30 p.m. at the Silver Lake Park soccer field. The concert is FREE to the public and will precede the fireworks display. Brought to you by Riverside Concerts and the Rochester Parks and Recreation Department.
This year's program is a musical journey through some of the great cities of our nation entitled "An American Panorama". Selections to include "Saint Louis Blues", "New York, New York", "I Left My Heart In San Francisco", "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans", "Kansas City", "My Kind of Town", and "Hooray For Hollytwood". Every year, one of the most memorable highlights of the concert is the the goosebump-raising performance of the finale to Tchaikovsky’s "1812 Overture" with the first few "BOOMS" of the fireworks display acting as the cannon fire.
In its 139th year of existence, the Concert Band has become a Rochester institution. Originally named the Rochester Park Band, the band's concert at the Independence Day Celebration has become an integral part of how we acknowledge the holiday here in Rochester. This annual event celebrates the rich and diverse talent of our community, commemorates the anniversary of our country's independence with patriotic favorites, both old and new, and is the overture to one of the finest fireworks displays in the area.
From Broadway hits to patriotic classics, with a dash of classical thrown in for good measure, Chuck and company offer up a little something for everyone; with a few surprises. Nothing says "summer" like a band concert in the park.
